CPRT Parent Group
for parents, foster caregivers, adoptive parents, and grandparents

What is Child-Parent-Relationship Therapy (CPRT)?

Child-Parent-Relationship Therapy (CPRT) is a structured, evidence-based intervention designed to enhance parent-child relationships and address behavioural concerns in children. The program is typically delivered in 10 weekly group sessions, each lasting 1-2 hours, with 2-8 parents per group. CPRT consists of three core components: learning therapeutic play skills, receiving feedback on skill practice, and connecting with other parents for support.

During sessions 1-3, parents acquire essential skills and prepare for their upcoming play sessions with their child. In weeks 4-10, parents implement these skills through weekly 30-minute special play sessions at home, while therapists provide guidance and feedback in a small group setting.

CPRT focuses on strengthening the parent-child bond as a means of addressing children's behavioural challenges. The program is designed for parents / grandparents and is available in individual, couple, or group formats. It is suitable for most children, including those who are typically developing, on the autism spectrum, or experiencing other developmental challenges. CPRT is also NDIS-approved.

Backed by extensive research, CPRT has been shown to be effective in reducing children's behavioural difficulties and lowering parental stress (Bratton et al., 2010). Studies highlight its positive impact across various populations and concerns.

If you believe CPRT may be a good fit for your family, please contact us for more information or to schedule an initial screening.
CPRT Benefit

For the Child:
Will help with anxiety, depression, anger, sadness, behavioural issues, regulating emotions, following directions, building self-esteem, and becoming self-reflective and emphatic.
For the Parent:
Will help with parenting frustrations that resort to yelling and punishment, responding calmly, connecting and setting useful boundaries and limits.
For the Child-Parent Relationship:
Will help in repairing/strengthening the relationship with the child, build deeper connection and easy and joyful communication improving the entire household environment.
More Affordable than Individual Child Therapy:
The cost of CPRT is usually a considerably smaller fraction of how much the individual therapy can sum up. It's easier to budget knowing the exact amount and that the play sessions that you will do with your child are unlimited and free of cost. You are skilled up for the rest of your life to resume play sessions with your child and revisit your new skills with your grandchildren making it an inter-generational intervention.
CPRT vs other parenting programs
You will be shown how to be therapeutic with your child, just the way it happens in therapy sessions with a professional therapist. It's different from other parenting models; it's less overwhelming and deductive and more relaxed and personal. You are not expected to change everything you do, but how to utilise new knowledge in weekly 30-minute play sessions with your child. CPRT, unlike other parenting programs like Triple P and 123 Magic, is not as heavily marketed, but has been extensively researched and has proven great outcomes.
