Filial Therapy

Father and Son Playing
Quality Time

Filial Therapy is a form of Play Therapy that trains parents and carers to use therapeutic skills with their children, helping to strengthen family relationships, boost parental confidence, and address a range of social and emotional issues faced by children.

Sessions Time Frame

Filial Therapy typically spans 16-20 sessions, tailored to each family's needs.

After getting to know the family and setting shared goals, the Play Therapist teaches parents or carers therapeutic skills during training sessions. These skills are then practiced in one-on-one play sessions with their children, supervised by the Play Therapist. As parents or carers gain confidence, they are supported in applying these therapeutic techniques at home.

This approach empowers parents and carers to become the primary therapeutic agents for their children, ensuring that the support comes from those closest to them.

Parents Involvement

Please note that at least one parent or carer is required to attend all sessions, while children will only participate in some.
